Who are we?

The Surrey Border League is a local chess league, originally formed in 1961. Before then the Surrey County Chess Association awarded the "Waechter Trophy" for "competition among clubs in the Guildford area". Possibly called the "Border League" in the early days by the 1990s/ early 2000s it was known as the "Surrey/ Hampshire Border League" and around 2004 it just became known as "the Surrey Border League".

This website?

This website was developed by Mike Gunn in September/ October 2025. Its main aim is to provide information about league rules, club details etc. If you notice any mistakes/ have ideas for improvements send them to mikewxyz@gmail.com. Details about current club fixtures and results can be found on the ECF LMS site (see Fixtures and Results page for how to find that). On this site clicking on any word with a pink background (as with the navigation bar above) will take you to a separate page. The same applies to the list of clubs playing in the league on the Clubs page. In time I intend to add some more pages here with some history of the league, historical results (winners of trophies etc).

Map

map

This map shows the geographical positions of chess clubs who play in the Surrey Border League. It uses public domain data provided by OpenStreetmap. Click here for the interactive version where you can pan across the area and zoom in and out. If you are using a computer with a mouse zooming in or out is controlled by the wheel and you pan by holding down the left button on your mouse and moving the mouse. The club locations are based on longitude and latitude values derived from Google Maps and mostly seem to put club venues in the right places, but let me know if your club venue is in the wrong place. I have already received several useful suggestions for improving the locations and will try to do this in the near future.
